6:01.
poke
“Sorry to bother, but do you have any glue I can borrow?”

6:02.
Realize that they’re talking to you.
Don’t respond right away—you’re too focused.

6:03.
Hand over the last bit of glue.
You need it, but you have to help. You always have to help.

6:04.
Check the time.
Check the never-ending to-do list.
Turn the music up loud enough to drown everything else out.

6:07.
Refocus.

6:34.
Shift in your seat.
Feel the stiffness in your neck and the growing pressure in your head.

6:41.
When did you last eat?
It doesn’t matter. There’s no time for that now.
You rested last night so you could power through tonight, so keep going. This critique is all that matters. It has to be perfect.

7:04.
Stand up. Stretch despite no relief.
Allow yourself to go to the bathroom. You’re not even sure when you last went. Keep your headphones on. Don’t get caught in conversation.

7:07.
Walk back to your desk quickly.
Eyes down. Feet fast.
Don’t look at anyone else’s work. You already know it’s infinitely better than yours.

7:08.
Think. Was architecture the right choice?

7:09.
Think. Are you really talented enough to be here?

7:10.
Think. Will you even be finished for pinup?

7:11.
Close your eyes. Breathe. Try to relax your brain.

7:14.
Picture the to-do list.
Picture your professors’ disappointment.
Picture your classmates laughing quietly.
They see it. They all see it: the flaws, the inadequacy, the proof that you don’t belong.

7:34.
Stop contemplating your failure and push it all down.
Focus on the Rhino model that won’t align, no matter how many times you try, and rage quietly. You should have learned this by now.

9:04.
Where did the time go?
Send to plotter. Print. Send to plotter. Print.

9:44.
Retrieve plots.
Realize the paper is slightly crinkled, the colors are off, and you’re missing a north arrow. Regret not doing a test print.

9:54.
Use the big trimmer and mess up the clean edge.
Switch to an X-Acto knife and straight edge. Try to steady your hands.
It won’t be perfect. It will never be perfect.

10:14.
Start pinning up.
Avoid looking at the work of others—but glance anyway.
Let it hurt. Let it motivate.

10:31.
Keep pinning.
Measure the spacing. Again. Again.
If the gaps aren’t even, they’ll know. They’ll know you’re a failure.

10:47.
Step back. Exhale with self-resentment.

10:51.
The studio is silent. Headphones on every head. No one speaks. The quiet feels heavy with stress and exhaustion.

11:03.
Return to your desk and sit down.
Keep working.
Add the final touches to your model.

11:28.
One edge doesn’t align?
Take it apart and start over.
There’s no time, but mistakes matter more than sleep.

11:41.
Focus.
Ignore the crunch of trail mix across the aisle.

11:44.
Focus.
Ignore the voices around finished projects echoing from the pit.

11:47.
Focus.
Ignore the hunger. The aching back. The mental numbness. Don’t let your body win.

2:07 a.m.
Check the time.
Stop. There’s nothing left you can fix before the crit.
Accept the impending failure.

2:14 a.m.
Go home.
Forget to eat.
Lie in bed.
Stare at the ceiling.
Dread the arrival of tomorrow.

3:04 a.m.
Still awake.
Run through your presentation.
Figure out how to distract the critics from your project’s overwhelming imperfection.

3:24 a.m.
Get up.
Eat something—ice cream, pizza—anything.

4:46 a.m.
Sleep.

Only 8 hours, 14 minutes, and 7 seconds until critiques begin—and for two minutes, the noise goes quiet.
